What you’ll learn
Translate pattern shorthand to actions in your hands. You’ll read both written rows and symbol charts and handle repeats cleanly.
Common abbreviations & symbols
- ch (chain) • sc (single crochet) • hdc • dc • sl st
- *…* repeat section • ( ) group stitches • [ ] alt size
- Chart basics: ∘=ch • short bar=sc • tall bar=dc • V=inc
Sizing & gauge
- Gauge tells stitches/rows per 4"—match yarn, hook, and tension.
- Sizes listed like XS[S, M, L, XL]; follow your bracket all the way.
How to read a pattern
1
Scan header
Check yarn weight, hook, gauge, finished size, and abbreviations legend.
2
Highlight your size
Circle your bracketed size across the whole pattern to avoid mix-ups.
3
Decode a line
“*2 dc, ch 1; rep from * 8 times” → work the bit after the asterisk as many times as stated.
4
Chart cross-check
Match written row to chart row; symbols help visualize increases/decreases.
5
Track progress
Use a magnet bar or washi tape to mark the current row; tick off repeats.
Tips
- Print patterns large; keep hook/row counters visible.
- Swatch 10–15 minutes to match gauge before starting.
- Write your size at the top of each page.
Troubleshooting
- Losing place: Use a highlighter bar; read aloud the repeat once.
- Wrong size drift: Verify brackets at each increase section.
- Off gauge: Adjust hook size up/down one step.
