Magic Ring → Clean, Repeatable Squares

Learn the classic 3-dc cluster square with chain-space corners. We’ll cover even tension, turning joins, and neat color changes.

Yarn, hook, and a granny square in progress

What you’ll make

A 2–3 round classic granny square you can join into blankets, scarves, or bags. Practice even cluster height and consistent chain spaces.

Yarn & hook

  • Worsted weight yarn (medium/4) in 1–3 colors
  • Hook size H/5.0mm (or per yarn)
  • Scissors + yarn needle
  • Stitch markers (optional)

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • MR – Magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space

Step-by-step (classic 3-dc cluster)

1
Magic ring

Make an MR, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). Work 2 dc into ring (1st cluster). ch 2 for corner.

2
Round 1

Work 3 dc, ch 2 — repeat until you have 4 clusters and 4 corners. Sl st to top of ch-3 to join. Tighten ring.

3
Round 2

Sl st to corner sp, ch 3; 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same corner. In next corner sp: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Repeat around; join.

4
Round 3 (optional)

Corners: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Side spaces: 3 dc in each ch-1 sp if used, or directly into the side sp. Join neatly.

5
Color changes

Join a new color in any corner with a standing dc or ch-3. Weave ends as you go for a cleaner back.

Tips

  • Keep chain-2 corners consistent—this keeps the square flat.
  • Match cluster height: pull each dc to the same lift.
  • Block finished squares lightly for crisp edges.

Troubleshooting

  • Wavy square: Too many chains or loose tension—tighten corners or drop hook size.
  • Curled square: Too tight—relax tension or add a ch between side clusters.
  • Messy joins: Use an invisible join or standing dc for cleaner color changes.

Show your squares

Post a 2–3 color square set and note your hook size and yarn brand for others.
