Yarn, hook, and a granny square in progress

What you’ll make

A 2–3 round classic granny square you can join into blankets, scarves, or bags. Practice even cluster height and consistent chain spaces.

Yarn & hook

  • Worsted weight yarn (medium/4) in 1–3 colors
  • Hook size H/5.0mm
  • Scissors + yarn needle
  • Stitch markers (optional)

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • MR – Magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sp – space

Step-by-step (classic 3-dc cluster)

1
Magic ring

Make an MR, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc). Work 2 dc into ring — this is your first cluster — then ch 2 for the first corner.

2
Round 1

Work 3 dc, ch 2 — repeat until you have 4 clusters and 4 ch-2 corners. Sl st to top of ch-3 to join. Tighten the ring.

3
Round 2

Sl st to corner sp; ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Repeat corner clusters around; join with sl st.

4
Round 3 (optional)

Corners: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Sides: 3 dc in each side space. Join neatly with sl st.

5
Color changes

Start a new color in any corner with a standing dc or ch-3. Weave ends in as you go for a tidy back.

Tips

  • Keep corner chains consistent—usually ch-2.
  • Match cluster height by pulling each dc to the same lift.
  • Block the finished square lightly for crisp edges.

Troubleshooting

  • Wavy square: Tension too loose → tighten or use smaller hook.
  • Curled square: Tension too tight → relax or add a ch on side clusters.
  • Messy joins: Try an invisible join or standing dc.
