Challenge overview

Make one amigurumi buddy that's roughly hand-sized (about 8–15 cm / 3–6 in tall). No need for perfection — aim for personality and a clean silhouette.

Level: confident beginner Time: 3–6 hrs total Best for: yarn + crochet hook
Your goal: finish a single, cohesive character by the end of the week.
Constraints: one main color, one accent color, and a simple face.
Bonus: add a tiny prop (scarf, bag, pet, etc.) if you have time.

What you’ll need

  • Worsted or DK weight yarn in one main color
  • Accent yarn for details (scarf, ears, stripes, etc.)
  • Crochet hook that matches your yarn (often 3.5–4 mm)
  • Polyfill or scrap yarn for stuffing
  • Yarn needle for sewing pieces together
  • Safety eyes or embroidery thread for the face
  • Stitch marker (or scrap yarn) to track rounds
  • Scissors and a small project bag or tray

Challenge steps

These are guidelines, not strict rules. Adjust stitch counts, proportions, or details to fit your own pattern or style.

1
Pick your buddy + sketch

Decide on a simple character: animal, food with a face, or a tiny self-portrait. Make a super quick doodle (60s max) to lock in the proportions and colors.

2
Build the core shape

Crochet the main body as a sphere, cylinder, or bean shape. Keep stitches tight so stuffing doesn’t peek through. Don’t worry about limbs yet — just get a clean base.

3
Add limbs and features

Work tiny arms, legs, ears, or fins as simple tubes or ovals. Attach them with whip stitch, keeping placement low-stress: slightly uneven often looks charming for amigurumi.

4
Face + personality pass

Add safety eyes or embroider simple dots/lines for eyes and mouth. A small blush, eyebrow line, or tilt of the mouth can totally change the mood — experiment before committing.

5
Finish with one tiny accessory

Use your accent color to add a scarf, tiny bag, bow, or hat. Keep it quick — 10–15 minutes max — so you actually finish the challenge instead of getting stuck in details.

Optional twists

  • Make a “friend set”: two tiny buddies that share the same colors.
  • Limit yourself to one evening of work for a speed challenge.
  • Base your buddy on a favorite snack, pet, or fictional character.
  • Try using leftover yarn scraps only — no new skeins allowed.
  • Keep notes on your rounds if you think you’ll want to remake the pattern later.

Share your amigurumi

When your buddy is finished, snap a photo in good light and upload it to the community gallery. Add a note about what you learned or what you’d change next time.
