What you’ll make

A basic tote ~14″×15″ (36×38 cm) with boxed corners and 1″ (2.5 cm) wide straps, unlined or simple facing.

Cut list

  • Body: 2× rectangles 16″×18″ (add seam allowance as desired).
  • Straps: 2× strips 4″×26–28″ (fold to 1″ finished).
  • Optional facing: 2× 3″×16″ strips.

Step-by-step

1
Press straps

Fold long edges to center, then in half; topstitch both sides.

2
Join body

With right sides together, stitch sides and bottom; press seams.

3
Box corners

Flatten corners, measure 2″ from tip, stitch across; trim excess.

4
Attach straps

Place ends 3–3½″ from side seams; stitch boxes with an X for strength.

5
Finish top

Double fold hem ½″+½″ or attach facing; topstitch all around.

Tips

  • Use canvas or sturdy cotton; lengthen stitch to 3.0–3.5 for thick seams.
  • Press after every step for crisp edges.
  • Interface straps for extra strength.

Troubleshooting

  • Wavy seams: Too much pulling—let feed dogs work.
  • Straps twist: Pin in a U-shape and check before stitching box-X.
  • Top edge ripples: Press and increase stitch length slightly.
