Project overview
This quick-start lesson teaches the core motions of crochet and tension control. You’ll practice a foundation chain, then work a few rows of single crochet and double crochet to create a small coaster (or swatch) about 10–12 cm wide.
Tools & materials
- Worsted-weight yarn (Category 4), light color preferred
- 5.0 mm crochet hook (US H-8) — or size to match yarn label
- Scissors
- Tapestry (yarn) needle for weaving in ends
- Optional: stitch marker and a ruler/measure tape
Sizes & setup
- Coaster target: ~4–4.5 in (10–12 cm) square
- Foundation chain: 16–18 chains (adjust to your tension)
- Row count: 14–16 rows (half in sc, half in dc)
- Gauge isn’t critical — focus on even tension and clean edges
Step-by-step
Make a slipknot
Wrap yarn to form a loop, pull a strand through to create a slipknot, and tighten onto the hook. Keep it snug but able to slide.
Chain (ch)
Yarn over (yo), pull through loop on hook. Repeat for 16–18 chains. Aim for even loops—not too tight.
Single crochet (sc) row
Insert hook into the 2nd chain from hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops), yo, pull through both. Work sc across the row. Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat sc rows
Work 6–8 rows of sc, always chain 1 then turn. Keep edges straight by working the first and last stitch consistently.
Double crochet (dc) rows
Chain 2 and turn. Yo, insert hook, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops), yo, pull through 2; yo, pull through remaining 2. Work 6–8 rows of dc.
Weave in ends
Cut yarn leaving ~6–8 in tail. Use a tapestry needle to weave through several stitches on the back for a clean finish.
Tips
- Relax your hands—most beginners crochet too tightly.
- Use a light yarn color so you can see the loops clearly.
- Count stitches at the end of each row to keep sides straight.
Troubleshooting
- Work is narrowing: You’re skipping the last stitch. Count and place a stitch in the final “V”.
- Too stiff: Try a larger hook or loosen tension slightly.
- Gaps in dc rows: Be sure you chained 2 at the start and are inserting into clean top “V” stitches.
