Challenge overview

Draft a simple top, skirt, or elastic-waist pants using rectangles and gentle curves. Keep the silhouette relaxed, the seams clean, and the finishes tidy so you can actually wear it.

Level: confident beginner Time: 3–6 hrs total Best for: woven fabric + basic machine
Your goal: one finished garment that fits comfortably.
Constraints: use straight seams, minimal pieces, and an elastic or tie waist.
Bonus: add a pocket or simple hem detail if time allows.

What you’ll need

  • Light–medium weight woven fabric (cotton/linen works great)
  • Matching thread; basic sewing machine + iron
  • Elastic (for waistband) or drawstring + safety pin
  • Measuring tape, fabric scissors/rotary cutter, pins or clips
  • Chalk/marker, ruler, and seam gauge (or a card marked at 1.5 cm)

Challenge steps

Keep shapes simple: rectangles + gentle curves. Aim for clean construction rather than fancy details.

1
Pick silhouette + measure

Choose one: elastic-waist skirt, boxy top, or lounge pants/shorts. Take key measurements (waist/hips/desired length; chest for tops; rise for pants).

2
Draft simple shapes

Draw rectangles to the half-body widths with ease (5–15 cm depending on fit) and add seam allowances (typically 1–1.5 cm). For arm/neck openings, sketch gentle curves.

3
Cut safely + mark

Fold fabric for mirrored pieces. Mark notches/centers and elastic casing lines. Keep grainlines parallel to the selvage for hang and durability.

4
Assemble in order

Sew side seams (and shoulder seams for tops). Press as you go. Create waistband casing, insert elastic or drawstring, and join ends securely. Try on and adjust ease if needed.

5
Finish edges neatly

Press hems; stitch once or twice for durability. Finish raw edges with zig-zag or pinking. Give the garment a final press—done!

Optional twists

  • Add in-seam pockets to skirt/pants (two rectangles, aligned at side seams).
  • Try a contrast hem or visible topstitch for a design accent.
  • Cut on the bias for a softer drape (uses more fabric).
  • Color-block with two fabrics; keep pieces rectangular to stay fast.
